Project Server 2007 with SQL Server 2008 R2: slow OLAP Cube Build

If you are experiencing slow OLAP Cube Builds after, for example, a migration to new Hardware and OS – consider to check and change the following settings.

These have also been mentioned in a Post by Brian Smith.

In order to enable the SQL Server query optimizer hotfix you have to enable the trace flag 4199. (I am talking about SQL Server 2008 R2 SP3, Version: 10.50.6000.34)

To do so:

  • Open Computer Management (I am working on a Windows Server 2012 R2) and switch to the “SQL Server Services”.
  • Then right-click on your SQL Server Service and click on “Properties”.

  • On the “Advanced” tab, add the additional startup parameter, as seen in the screenshot.

  • Save the changes (Apply/OK) and restart the SQL Server Service.

Now you can try again to build your cube. Before it took hours to build, now only a few minutes.
